Moving or Relocating

Whether it's across the street or across the country, there are a million details to sort out when you move. But before you start collecting boxes, you should make sure that your financial stability and your loved ones are protected by homeowners insurance.

Your old home
Since moving can be very expensive, it's tempting to try to save a bit of money by ending your current homeowners policy before you complete the sale of the house- but it's not a good idea. What happens if your possessions are damaged while you're packing? Or stolen while moving them from one home to another. And don't forget, homeowners insurance doesn't just cover your own property, it protects you in case a personal liability claim is made against you. Don't let a nosy neighbor's fall on your front porch jeopardize your family's financial stability. Your best bet? Keep your homeowner's policy until the day you close on the sale of your old home. (If you rent your home, continue your renters policy through the day you move out.)

The move
Check your homeowners policy to see if it covers your possessions during the move. If you hire professional movers, ask them what kind of insurance coverage they offer for your belongings.

Handy tip: Use your homeowner's insurance inventory as a reference to make sure that everything you put on the moving truck at your old home comes off the moving truck at your new home. (Haven't updated the inventory in a while? Make your packing do double duty and update the list as you go along. Better yet, take video or still pictures of your rooms and closet or drawer contents. It will also be a big timesaver when you take out a homeowners policy for your new residence, or ever have to file a claim.)

Your new home
Don't wait to move into your new home to secure a homeowners policy. The day you close on the house is the day your new policy should begin. (And, if you are financing part of the purchase price your lender will most likely require a homeowners policy listing their interest.) Homeowners insurance can help protect you against accidents that take place on the property or damage that happens to the house or your personal belongings.
